The Heart of U-Haul: Employee Stories That Inspire

At the core of #UHaulLife are the people—the dedicated Team Members who turn challenges into triumphs every day. U-Haul prides itself on promoting from within, with countless stories of individuals starting in entry-level roles and climbing to leadership positions through perseverance and passion. Promotions are frequent and celebrated, as seen in stories like Tom’s rise to Area District Vice President of New Mexico, Kansas, and Colorado, or Lucy’s appointment as Marketing Company President of Northern Minnesota. These examples illustrate how entry roles can lead to executive positions, with mentorship programs guiding the way. Over 70% of leadership positions are filled internally, creating a culture of loyalty and aspiration.

Take Michelle, for instance. She joined U-Haul in 1992 as a rate monitor, a role that involved analyzing pricing and customer trends to ensure competitive services. Over the years, Michelle’s keen eye for detail and commitment to customer satisfaction propelled her forward. By 2022, she had risen to the position of Director of Customer Service, overseeing teams that handle thousands of inquiries daily. “It’s not just about the job; it’s about growing with a company that values your input,” Michelle shared in a recent internal spotlight. Her journey exemplifies how #UHaulLife fosters long-term careers, leveraging benefits like tuition reimbursement and flexible scheduling to balance work with personal goals.

Similarly, Jeff’s story is one of rapid ascent and regional impact. Starting seven years ago in a customer-facing role, Jeff quickly demonstrated leadership qualities that led to his promotion as Marketing Company President of Northwest Chicago. In this role, he manages operations across multiple locations, ensuring seamless service for customers during peak moving seasons. Jeff credits U-Haul’s supportive environment: “The company invests in you through training and mentorship, making every promotion feel earned and exciting.” His experience highlights the emphasis on internal mobility, where skills like sales techniques and safe driving are honed through U-Haul University courses.

Kyle’s path is another testament to the growth mindset embedded in #UHaulLife. Beginning as a customer service representative in 2009, Kyle navigated various roles before being promoted to Vice President of Rates and Distribution. This position involves strategic oversight of pricing models and inventory distribution, crucial for U-Haul’s efficiency. Kyle’s story, celebrated in company communications, underscores the value of dedication: “U-Haul rewards those who bring energy and ideas to the table.”

Beyond promotions, #UHaulLife shines in everyday moments. Employees like Stanley, with over 30 years of service, share tales of high-energy contributions that keep the fleet running smoothly. Or consider the wellness advocates who promote “Wellness Wednesday” tips, such as incorporating colorful diets or taking standing breaks every 30 minutes. These small acts build a supportive network, where colleagues become family.

In reviews from platforms like Indeed and Glassdoor, employees frequently praise this familial atmosphere. One reviewer noted, “Working at U-Haul was my most positive work experience; everyone interacted like a family, helping each other out regularly.” Such feedback reinforces that #UHaulLife isn’t just a hashtag—it’s a lived reality that turns jobs into fulfilling careers.

Diversity in roles—from IT to field operations—means opportunities for all. The company’s growth, including expansions in self-storage and U-Box services, creates new paths. Incentives like referral bonuses and performance rewards keep motivation high.

Commitment to Well-Being and Work-Life Balance

U-Haul recognizes that its greatest asset is its people, and this belief drives a robust commitment to employee well-being. In a world where work-life balance is often elusive, U-Haul stands out as a leader, earning accolades like being named one of the “Best Companies for Work-Life Balance” by Comparably in 2018—the only Arizona-based company on the list.

Central to this is the “You Matter” program, which provides mental health support through confidential counseling (up to five sessions per issue annually), concierge services, legal and financial advice, and 24/7 phone access. Expanded in recent years to address post-pandemic needs, this initiative ensures Team Members have resources to navigate life’s challenges. As one executive noted, “We are committed to providing a healthy and safe work environment,” a sentiment echoed in sustainability reports that detail ergonomic workspaces and safety protocols.

Physical health is equally prioritized. U-Haul’s wellness programs have earned it recognition for having some of the healthiest employees in the industry. Initiatives include on-site fitness challenges, nutrition workshops, and partnerships with health organizations. For example, during Hunger Action Month, employees participate in charity drives that not only give back but also promote team bonding. Flexible shifts and remote options for administrative roles further enhance balance, allowing parents and caregivers to thrive.

Veterans hold a special place in #U-Haul Life, with targeted hiring programs and benefits that honor their service. On Veterans Day, the company highlights transitions from military to civilian roles, offering positions in operations, IT, and more. This inclusivity extends to diversity efforts, such as women’s leadership networks and support for underrepresented groups.

These efforts aren’t just policies—they translate into real outcomes. Surveys show high satisfaction rates, with employees appreciating the blend of stability and flexibility. In an era of high turnover, U-Haul’s retention speaks volumes about its investment in people.

Community Impact and Philanthropy: Giving Back with Heart

U-Haul Life extends far beyond the workplace; it’s about making a difference in the communities we serve. U-Haul’s philanthropic arm is robust, with partnerships that address homelessness, disaster relief, and more.

A standout collaboration is with Humble Design, a nonprofit that furnishes homes for families transitioning out of homelessness. In 2021, U-Haul sponsored events surprising mothers and children with fully decorated spaces, and by 2025, this partnership has impacted thousands. Recent initiatives, like the Cleveland Day of Service, saw Team Members volunteering to assemble furniture and deliver hope. As one participant shared, “It’s rewarding to see the smiles we create—it’s the essence of #UHaulLife.”

Disaster response is another pillar. Following events like the Canyon Fire in 2025, U-Haul offered 30 days of free storage and U-Box containers to evacuees across Southern California. This echoes past efforts, such as post-Hurricane Florence aid in 2018, where free units helped families rebuild. The company’s “1,000 Pounds Club” at St. Vincent de Paul in Phoenix demonstrates ongoing support for the working poor, with U-Haul donating resources to combat homelessness in its headquarters city.

Migration trends also inform community engagement. U-Haul’s annual reports on one-way rentals highlight population shifts, like outflows from California to Texas, guiding charitable focus. Events like the West Virginia Vehicle Adventure bring the public together, showcasing trucks while raising awareness for local causes.

Through these actions, U-Haul embodies corporate responsibility, partnering with organizations like Feeding America and veteran groups. Employees are encouraged to volunteer, with paid time off for community service, fostering a sense of purpose.
